For those of you who haven’t met the teenage protagonists of my CUL8R [See You Later] series, here’s a little summary of their latest adventure.

RIP (Rest in Peace) by Bob Kat

You don’t have to believe in ghosts…until you meet one.

The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado has a well-deserved reputation for being one of the most haunted places in the U.S.  So, when Kelly, Scott, Austin and Zoey travel back to 1911 to try to save a young child who went missing from the busy lobby, they aren’t surprised when ghost children run up and down the halls.

There’s romance in the Rockies as they take jobs with the hotel so they can keep an eye on 4 year old Emma and her family.  Kelly struggles with her attraction to Austin while Zoey tries to get over her broken heart.  Along the way, they meet some colorful historical characters and experience life among the rich and famous just after the turn of the twentieth century.  After three other successful time travel adventures, they assume it’s just a matter of being in the right place at the right time.  That almost proves to be a fatal mistake.

But can they save Emma?  Or will they join her as permanent guests in the ghostly halls of The Stanley Hotel?

What is your name? Are you fictional/historical?

Hi.  My name is Kelly Welch, and I just celebrated my 16th birthday last month.  My friends and I have found a way to travel back in time when someone needs our help.  So, I guess you could say I live in the present, but I get to see what it’s like to live in the past.

When and where is your story set?

So far this summer, it’s been crazy.  A drunk driver killed my parents and now I’m living with my aunt in Fort Myers Beach, Florida.  I miss my parents with all my heart, but I’ve made some great friends and we’re having amazing adventures.  Already this summer we saved a girl’s life from 1966, spent a harrowing few days on an island we thought was deserted, but were nearly killed by a raving maniac back in 1980.  The most fun was when we joined a travelling circus in 1927 and kept a teenage boy from being thrown off a train.  I loved being around all those animals, especially the horses.  But things got really complicated when Zoey and the boy fell in love.  And now we’ve just traveled back to 1911 where we’re staying at The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado.  This was only one year after it was built, and I didn’t think it could already be haunted.  But I was wrong.

What should we know about you?

I’m really ordinary with long straight, dark brown hair, hazel eyes and a few extra pounds that I’m trying to get rid of before school starts.  Of course, Zoey, one of my new friends is drop-dead gorgeous which makes me feel all that much more plain.  For some reason, Austin seems to like me just the way I am.  Wow, my heart beats faster when I just think about him.  He looks sort of like a young Ashton Kutcher, tall, dark and oh, so handsome.  We have a lot of fun hanging out, and he almost kissed me once.  I’m sure it’s just fun and games for him, but he’s my first major crush.  The trip to The Stanley Hotel was strange and wonderful and scary…but at least I got to spend more time with Austin.

What is screwing up your life?

I’m both terrified and excited about starting my junior year of high school.  I’ve always been home schooled, so it’s going to be a big change.  I’ve seen a lot of movies about mean girls and bullying, so I’m a little nervous that I won’t fit in.

And I’m really worried that my aunt will find out that we’ve been taking these little trips to the past.  We always think they’re going to be easy, but somehow things always get a little crazy and we barely escape with our lives.  If anyone ever finds out about how we travel, they’ll take it away from us and we wouldn’t be able to have the fantastic experiences.

What is your goal?

Ever since we found the Spirit Radio, a Thomas Edison invention that allowed him to communicate with dead people, my friends and I have been touched by the cries for help from people in the past who have unsolved mysteries.  I’d like to keep going back and doing what I can to keep these people from losing someone they love.  If only I could go back and keep my parents from being killed…but it doesn’t work like that, unfortunately.  So, my friends and I will have to careful not to get discovered so we can continue to save lives.

What is the title of your book?

RIP (Rest in Peace) is a romantic story of lost love, new love, mixed with a little mystery and a lot of danger.  I didn’t believe in ghosts when we arrived at The Stanley Hotel, but I did by the time we left.  Here’s a little blurb from the book about my first contact with someone not quite human.

Kelly forced her tired body into a sitting position.  “I’m not going to waste another minute when I could be sleeping.”

With an unexpected burst of speed, Zoey shot up and ran to the bathroom.  “Me first,” she called out before shutting the door.

“Of course,” Kelly muttered and let herself fall back on the bed.  That was typical Zoey.  Hopefully, she wouldn’t use all the towels.  Kelly tried to talk herself into getting up, taking off her boots and getting her things ready for bed.  But she was so tired.  Maybe if she rested for just a couple of minutes.  Her eyelids drifted closed…

She was walking outside among the guests with Austin.  Instead of the severe black and white uniform, she was wearing a soft dress with tiny pink, yellow and blue flowers sprinkled all over it.  The material was light and floated around her like a silky scarf blowing in the mountain breeze.  Austin, too, was dressed like a gentleman of the era in a tweed jacket and a jaunty driving cap on top of his dark brown hair.  He looked even more handsome than usual as he turned toward her and held out his hand.

He had held her hand before, but usually just to help her or keep her from falling.  This time, it was just because he wanted to…and that made her heart beat faster in anticipation.  She took his hand and savored the way his fingers wrapped around hers.  No wonder he was the star quarterback with fingers so long and strong.  He tightened his grip.

Ow…that was a little too tight.  She tried to get him to loosen it, but she didn’t want to complain for fear he’d let her go.  His fingers continued to squeeze until it was actually becoming painful.  She wanted to pull her hand away, but she couldn’t.  Tighter.  Harder.  She heard herself whimper.  She couldn’t bear it.  Her fingers felt like they were being crushed.  “Stop…please,” she cried.  “You’re hurting me.”

Abruptly, she woke up and bolted into a sitting position.  Her hand was throbbing and as she looked at it, she saw that it had the red outlines of someone’s fingers on the back…fingers much smaller than Austin’s.

The bathroom door opened and Zoey walked out.  “What are you shouting about?” she asked.  “I could hear it even with the water running.”

“Did you squeeze my hand?” Kelly asked, a little angry at being tricked.  “That wasn’t funny.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.  I was in the bathroom.”

Kelly’s eyes narrowed suspiciously.  “You weren’t just out here?”

“No, honestly.  I’ve been in the bathroom with the door shut.”

Kelly lifted her hand.  The finger marks had faded, but were still slightly visible.  She thrust her hand toward Zoey.  “Someone was just holding my hand so tightly, it left prints.  Look!”

Zoey stepped closer.  Her blond eyebrows lifted as she looked at Kelly’s hand.  “It wasn’t me.”

Kelly flexed her fingers.  The feeling was just coming back into them.  Her voice quivered a little as she asked, “If it wasn’t you…then who was it?”

They both looked around.  The door was still locked, and there was no one else in the room.

So, when will the book be published?

RIP (Rest in Peace) by Bob Kat is self-published on Amazon.com just in time for the Halloween season.  There’s no better way to celebrate the holiday than to curl up with a great ghost story…but keep the lights on.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR – Bob Kat

Bob Kat is actually a husband (Bob) and wife (Kathy – get it?  Bob Kat) writing team who are fans of romance, time travel and mysteries and love reliving their teenage years through the adventures of Kelly, Scott, Austin and Zoey (of course, without the time travel).  The series has won an amazing number of awards including Best Indie Book Young Adult of 2013 (OMG), Best Indie Book Young Adult of 2014 (BION), Reader’s Favorite YA of 2013 (BRB) and Reader’s Favorite YA of 2014 (BION).

Kathy has always been a storyteller.  She published her first book when she was just four years old…okay, it was self-published (way ahead of the trend).  The Little Black Horse That Ran Away was self-illustrated and completely sold out of its first printing (one copy to her mother).

Years later, Kathy’s first official book was published by Dell.  Since then, she had a total of 23 novels published by Dell, Crown and Harlequin and 9 novels self-published on Amazon.com.  She writes adult romantic suspense and new adult romances under the name Kathy Clark.

To be perfectly honest, Kathy and Bob would rather be riding horses or sitting on a white sand beach, reading a book than writing, but the characters in their heads insist that they tell their stories, just like that little black horse so long ago.

Young Adult Mystery Series 2013 Awards and 88% FIVE Star Review Rate

As we near the end of 2013 I wanted to take a minute and take stock of the Young Adult Mystery Series CUL8R [See You Later].  Three books have been released thus far with the fourth book in the series releasing in late January, 2014.

First.  Thank you readers for your purchases, glowing reviews and continued loyalty.

The CUL8R Time Travel Mystery Series is a different type of time travel where the protagonists aim to change the past and save the future. Four high school friends are able to do two things no one else on the planet can do . . . talk with dead people and time travel to the past.  The question would be early on would readers embrace this series and the answer is yes.  Great reviews, sales and contest winning results happened in 2013.

WEB TILE CUL8R OMG

In book #1, OMG Kelly has a major adjustment to move from the only life she has ever known in Texas to live with her aunt in Ft. Myers Beach, Florida. She quickly makes friends with her quirky next door neighbor, Scott and his best friend, Austin. In her aunt’s garage, they find a long-lost invention of Thomas Edison called “The Telephone to the Dead”. Edison had abandoned the project and given it to Kelly’s great-great-grandfather.

Scott tinkers with it until they can hear sounds coming from it. But instead of broadcasting music . . . it picks up conversations from the dead. As they slowly turn the dial they hear hundreds of sad, lonely voices of souls that have passed but apparently never moved on, pleading for help.

A teenager’s voice separates from the rest and begs for their help to clear her reputation. They are shocked to find out that she had gone to their own high school . . . 47 years ago. They research the girl’s story and discover that her name was Wendy and she had been a popular cheerleader who had apparently committed suicide.

The teens are touched by Wendy’s cries and pleas, but they have no way to go back in time to help her. That is, until Scott reveals an invention of his own . . . a time travel app. Kelly and Austin are very skeptical. Even Scott isn’t sure it will work, so they try it out on his sister’s pet turtle. Amazingly, the turtle disappears. But did it travel to the past or just wander off?

Finally, they decide to humor Scott and go along with his claims of time travel. They meet on the beach after everyone else has gone home. They stand in the formation Scott insists will create the perfect vortex for time travel. At the last moment, a fourth person runs forward and is pulled into their adventure back to 1966.

They figure out a way to get close to Wendy without her asking too many questions that they can’t answer. But as they discover the secret to her death, they find it’s not as clear-cut as it would seem. A romance gone wrong, an over-attentive teacher and a young girl’s dreams for the future are all twisted into a mystery that causes the teens to take greater risks than they could have imagined. It all becomes very real when their own lives are in danger and they realize they may never make it back to the present.

OMG – Winner of the Best Indie Book of 2013 for Young Adults and Finalist in the 2013 Beverly Hills Book Awards.

WEB TILE CUL8R BRB

In book #1, BRB, Kelly, Scott, Austin and Zoey gather in Scott’s lab, listening to the old radio that Thomas Edison had invented and called “The Telephone to the Dead”. As they slowly turn the dial they hear hundreds of sad, lonely voices of souls that have passed but apparently never moved on, pleading for help. When they first discovered the radio in Kelly’s aunt’s garage, they had been touched by the cries and pleas coming from its speakers, but they had no way to go back in time to help them. That is, until Scott reveals an invention of his own . . . a time travel app. They’ve tested it only once, but that first trip had been successful . . . if you ignore the fact that Zoey and Kelly had almost gotten killed by a serial killer. Even though they returned with a few scrapes and bruises, they are eager to go on a new adventure and help solve another mystery.

A very young girl’s voice comes through, saying that her whole family has been murdered on an island just off the east coast of Florida.

The teens look the island up on Google Maps and see that it is completely deserted which contradicts the story they’re getting from the Spirit Radio. But it’s a beautiful island called Crystal Key with a stretch of beach that, unlike Ft. Myers Beach, is not crowded with tourists and kids. The teens decide to pop in, spend a nice day on the beach, check out the island to see if there is any truth to the girl’s story, then pop right back. It sounds like a great plan.

From the very beginning, things go wrong when Scott miscalculates their landing and they end up splashing into the Atlantic Ocean. After swimming for their lives, they collapse on the beach that is, indeed, beautiful. But it isn’t deserted. They find the little girl, her family and a half dozen more people living in a sprawling Florida-style home owned by a menacing man named Manuel. He gives them no opportunity to escape and insists that they stay in the house. What they discover during their visit is enough to almost get them all killed.

As they struggle to survive, Kelly tries to ignore her attraction to Austin, who clearly isn’t interested in a romance. Besides, just days before she went on her very first date . . . with Scott. How could she have such strong feelings for two boys? And then there is Zoey who is hot for Austin, but flirting shamelessly with Scott. Then people start dying and all they can think about is saving the families and themselves. Are they destined to be a madman’s latest victims? Their time travel adventure to a tropical paradise may turn out to be their last.

It’s difficult to investigate a crime that hasn’t happened yet.

BRB won top honors in the Readers’ Favorite awards.

WEB TILE CUL8R BION

Finally, in BION, Book #3, they surprise Kelly on her birthday and soon they are back in Scott’s lab, listening to the old radio that Thomas Edison had invented and called “The Telephone to the Dead”. As they slowly turn the dial Kelly, Scott, Austin and Zoey hear hundreds of sad, lonely voices of souls that have passed but apparently never moved on, pleading for help. When they first discovered the radio in Kelly’s aunt’s garage, they had been touched by the cries and pleas coming from its speakers, but they had no way to go back in time to help them. That is, until Scott reveals an invention of his own . . . a time travel app. They’ve already tested it twice, with both trips being very successful, but not without danger. Even though they returned with a few scrapes and bruises, and even a gunshot wound, they are eager to go on a new adventure and help solve a mystery.

A young woman’s voice comes through and asks them to find her twin brother, Jesse, who had run away to the circus in 1927, then disappeared and was never heard from again. Going back and living with a circus sounds like fun. Plus an old book written by his sister provides a glimpse into the past . . . as well as a photo of Jesse, a photo that grabs their attention and sets the girls’ hearts racing.

They land in a cornfield in Wichita Falls, Texas as the circus is setting up. It doesn’t take them long to discover that circus life is not all glamour and fun; it’s a lot of hard work. As usual, they jump in and quickly find jobs, places to sleep and new friends. But most importantly, they find Jesse. Now all they have to do is keep him alive.
For Zoey and Jesse, it’s love at first sight. It’s a first romance for both of them and their love blossoms as they travel from city to city. Zoey knows she’s too young to settle down and that Jesse is from a different time and culture, but her feelings for him are strong. Her and her friends’ time travel mission has taken on a new dimension. Should they be successful and save his life, will Zoey be able to let him go? Is it possible for him to come to 2013 with her? Is it possible for her to stay in 1927 with him? Ultimately, can she give up everything she has in the present for true love in the past?
Jesse’s talent working with the big cats catches the attention of the Martin Maxwell, the owner of the circus. Maxwell promotes him to the center ring as a replacement for their current lion tamer who is planning on moving up to the Ringling and Barnum & Bailey Circus. Unfortunately, not everyone shares Zoey’s love for Jesse and wants him to disappear forever. Kelly, Scott, Austin and Zoey must figure out who wants Jesse dead and stop him or her before Jesse’s fate is sealed.

And following in the tracks of the first two CUL8R series books, BION has also been accumulating excellent reviews.

New Book Release…an opportunity to become a part of it and save money

Well the long process of launching my new book will be over in just more eleven days.  This started a month before the book was actually completed but probably should have started earlier.

Before I get too far…if you want a free, pre-release ARC of the book the last week of the month please leave you email address in your comments.  Let me know if a PDF would work okay for you.  All I ask in exchange for a free book is you review on Amazon on or after July 31st of my latest book.

The Book is BION, for believe it or not, and is book #3 in the CUL8R [See you later] Time Travel Mystery Series.  BION will be released on July 31, 2013.

BION 071613 Amazon final

The series was developed to change the young adult – new adult market book, film and TV markets away from books being zombie, magician, comic book and super-hero driven.  Instead everyday men/boys and women/girls, ages 15 to 19, who can through their own energy and talent, outwit, out work and outlast the forces of evil to solve the problems of their time and age.  The heroes of the stories are so everyday teens they could be the readers and vice-versa. The placement of the problem to be solved in another time in the past adds to the risk, humor and learning that had to take place.

The first book, OMG, was released in late 2012, and was named The Best Indie Book of 2013 for Young Adult Fiction and was a Finalist in the Beverly Hills Book Awards.  The initial time travel tip was back to 1966 to investigate and right the wrongs of adult who was involved in the reported suicide of the high school student Wendy. The Amazon link is http://www.amazon.com/CUL8R-Time-Travel-Mystery-ebook/dp/B00AF2Q30E/ The current ranking for 27 reviews is a 4.9 out of 5 stars!

“It’s difficult to investigate a crime that hasn’t happened yet.”

Kelly, Scott, Austin and Zoey have just returned from changing a girl’s life in 1966 and are a little battered and bruised from their adventure. But when a small voice pleads for their help to save her family from a murderer, they know they must respond.

They research the story, but there is very little information to be found. All they know is that it takes place on Crystal Key, a small private island off the Florida Keys. Since it appears to be deserted, they decide to pop in, gather clues, then pop back. It was a good excuse to spend a lazy day on a beautiful beach.
But from the first step, their journey back to 1980 goes horribly wrong. The area is crawling with drug traffickers and tens of thousands of refugees fleeing Cuba. They meet the young girl and her family, but their intervention puts them in the direct path of the killer.

Can they find out who he is in time to save the girl, her family . . . and themselves? Or are they destined to be a madman’s latest victims?

If you buy the book please leave a review.  Nothing helps promote a new book on line more than good honest reviews.

The book is titled BION [Believe It Or Not] and is book #3 in the Time Travel Mystery Series CUL8R {See you later].  It is tagged as young adult fiction but the vast majority of reviews are adults, age 20 to 60.  The log line of this book is the last line of the blurb. Believe it or Not . . . “Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls …welcome to the best entertainment money can buy, the Maxwell Brothers Circus!”

And before I tell you about me here is the dedication to BION that would not have happened had it not been for Jackie…

Each book in the CUL8R Time Travel Mystery Series challenges our main characters in different ways and to solve different types of problems.  Some teenagers find themselves as a threat to another person and depending on the situation; could be at risk.  With nothing familiar around them but their friends, their challenge is to take control in order to handle the problem.

We set this story in the roaring twenties in the middle of Texas and on the road with the circus playing two shows a day and traveling in luxury by train in converted hospital cars, to the next town.  It is the author’s job to bring the plight of teenage troubles into the light and create a positive role for doing the right thing in their life and for themselves and those around them.

This book is dedicated to Showfolks everywhere, especially The Showfolks of Sarasota, an International Alliance of Circus Artists and Executives.  Their generosity and friendliness made us feel like family.   Showfolks are amazing, interesting and talented people and the statement on their website sums it up.  “From performing artists, to office staff, from concessionaires and riggers, to promoters, from circus fans, to local friends, Showfolks members can honestly be proud when they exclaim “This Is What We Accomplished Together.”

A special thanks to the world’s greatest clown and an adorable gentleman, Jackie LeClaire.  Without his wonderful stories and extreme kindness, this book wouldn’t have the authenticity that we wanted.  It would have been easy to just go on line and research the circus in 1927, but without Jackie, it wouldn’t have had a soul or a heart.  Much love and thanks to you, Jackie.

COLLECTIONS Single Dads

Single Dads consists of two of my all-time favorite novels.  Both have been great selling books for years it is an annual favorite at Father’s Day time.  These are both romantic comedies because any time you have a child in the mix, things seem to quickly get out of control.  The three boys in Count Your Blessings are actually based on my own three sons, Greg, Adam and Scott.  It was a lot of fun to write their characters. Teacher’s Pet is one of those special books that, even though I wrote it and know what’s going to happen, it still makes me laugh and cry.  I wish I had a daughter like Whitney.  There’s also a bit of a character crossover from Angel of Mercy.  I hope you enjoy reading these books as much as I enjoyed writing them.

COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS – Luke Calloway is a turkey farmer in the heartland of Iowa. He has survived the loss of his wife, and is learning to cope with a drastic change of career (from big city dentist to the owner of Wishbone Acres in the small town of Greenhaven) while raising three rambunctious sons.  He’s doing an admirable job and isn’t looking for love.  But that’s exactly what he finds when Darcy Carson returns to town.

Darcy Carson, a successful Los Angeles television reporter, had fled from Iowa as soon as she was able.  Small towns held no appeal for her, but the glamour and excitement of Southern California certainly did following a suspension by the station where she’s employed, she returns home, telling herself that she’ll only stay until she wins her court case and can return to work.

But Darcy hasn’t planned on meeting Luke.  She fights her attraction to him, telling herself he represents everything she ran away from.  Luke, too, fights his growing love for Darcy.  He knows he’s only a temporary stopover in her life,  that soon she’ll return to California, breaking his heart, and those of his sons.

Neither Luke nor Darcy are prepared for the way love sweeps into their lives, changing everything.

TEACHER’S PET – When five-year-old Whitney Sloane took a shine to her kindergarten teacher, Miss Greene, it spelled trouble for her handsome dad.

Whitney thought Allison Greene would make a great mom. she had only one problem…getting her lonely dad and her lovely teacher together.

Justin Sloane couldn’t understand why his once perfect daughter had cut off another girl’s braid or why she had put Mr. Wiggly Nose and Snow White, the classroom rabbits, into the same cage so that they made little bunnies while the whole class watched in fascination…until he met Whitney’s idol at the PTA. Suddenly life became wonderfully frustrating for this single father.

How could Justin make the grade with the delightful Miss Greene when she wouldn’t dream of breaking the rules and dating a student’s parent?

TEACHER’S PET, originally titled GOOD MORNING, MISS GREENE appeared on the Waldenbooks Bestseller List.

Romance Collections Three and Four

Dear readers,

Wine flights, also sometimes referred to as tasting flights, are tastings of multiple wines, which allow tasters to get a feel for breadth or depth. They are usually intended for those new to the experience of tasting wine, or those who want to increase their understanding of a specific region, vintage, or varietal.

A romance collection is very similar but with added advantages. It includes either two or three romance novels but not just a taste. They are full length unabridged romance novels that allow the reader to get a feel for the breadth and depth of the author in a singular sub-genre or type of story.

Today two Collections are being released. Pregnant and Alone and Single Dad’s. A great romance novel isn’t just about the sex and not everything in life is pretty, free or easy.

Pregnant and Alone consists of two of my all-time best-selling novels. In both books, the heroines find out they are pregnant. Neither are married, but both are delighted at the prospect of becoming mothers. Their circumstances are very different, but each is faced with the complications of adding the father back into their lives. Caution: these books are emotionally charged. You’ll laugh and you’ll cry along with Lauren and Jessica. They will touch your heart forever.

Romance Collection for Best Of The West

Hello again past, present and future readers,

As I mentioned in my earlier blog, in 2012 I made 21 of my 23 novels previously published through several mainstream publishing houses available on Amazon.com. In late 2012 I began to publish my suspense and young adult fiction as an Indie author. And while my career has taken a turn from romance to suspense and time travel mysteries I have decided to also take the time and effort to answer both an old and new reader request, making the books available as several collections.Earlier today I was pleased to announce that I am taking the 21 novels and grouping them in a collection of books. I believe this is a good solution to reader queries and requests.

The books are being separated into 9 different collections of similar sub-genres and reader interest. Remember these are the original full length unabridged books. All of the collections of either two or three books each, are published direct to the reader at a price that will save them money. It is the start of the summer reading season so enjoy!

This morning it was Men In Uniform and now here is a brief blurb for the second romance collection, Best Of The West.

COLLECTIONS Best Of The West

Many fans have requested that I offer boxed sets of my romance novels, so I have grouped them into categories that share themes.  This one I’ve titled Best of the West because the two novels take place in the modern-day Wild West states of Colorado and Montana.  Goodbye Desperado and Cody’s Last Stand were two of my favorites, partly because they both have lots of horses, but mostly because the two heroes are super-sexy macho studs.  For those of you who love sensual, but emotional love stories, I think you’ll enjoy spending some time with Matt Montana and John Cody.
