The Thrill Of Suspense Across The Ages Blog

In the past I wrote about the re-branding of my reader facing social media and other advertising and marketing materials.  In the last ten days everything moved from being about me, Kathy Clark, sometimes Bob Kat, the young adult author to what I, and my husband on two of the three series, write about, suspense.

So we branded the author slogan, The Thrill Of Suspense and a secondary longer slogan by adding the phrase Across The Ages.

This blog has now been re titled The Thrill Of Suspense Across The Ages.

Here are some of the graphics you will see on line…but behind it is me and what we write about.

Getting Ready For March 20th.

So what happens on March 20th?

After one month of building reviews and releasing book #4, RIP in the Teen Time Travel Mystery Series, CUL8R, I am finally ready to launch formal advertising of the book to the world.

To date it has received 17 reviews, almost all 5 stars and there are another dozen or so free copies floating around the planet still to weight in.  This blog is about the press release planned for that date.  I want to also thank the Stanley Hotel for their  support. It is a must see whenever you’re in Colorado.

WEB TILE CUL8R SERIES     THUMBNAIL RIP 021614

Already a top 100 on Amazon Teen & YA time travel…and here’s the Press Release for the formal announcement of RIP’s release on March 20TH.  Here’s the press release as planned today.

Colorado’s Stanley Hotel hosts a new ghost story by Bob Kat titled RIP (Rest in Peace) to be released on February 25, 2014. “While The Stanley Hotel has been featured in TV, movies & books in the past, it is refreshing to see a new twist on the use of the hotel,” Jesse Freitas, Manager of The Stanley Hotel stated.

The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado was founded by F.O. Stanley, a wealthy businessman forced to move west for health reasons. The expansive property boasts amazing architecture, a magnificent setting and spectacular views, but it may forever be best known as the inspiration for Stephen King’s spine-tingling novel “The Shining” and the subject of Ghost Hunters, the American paranormal reality television series on several occasions.

“But now The Stanley Hotel is in the news again,” says Kathy Clark, a.k.a. Bob Kat, an American fiction author,https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kathy_Clark_(American_author).

Jesse Feitas said, “We are excited that the CUL8R book series has chosen The Stanley Hotel as a destination for RIP, not only to tie in a connection with the paranormal stories but traveling back in time to the first couple of years in The Stanley Hotel’s history brings in a whole new fun element to the story.”

“My co-writer in this series, husband Bob Wernly of Austin, Texas and I chose to set the 4th book in the CUL8R Time Travel Mystery Series at the infamous hotel after several trips and many weeks of guest time over the years. We worked hard to describe the hotel as accurately as possible because it’s such a wonderful place and we wanted to do it justice. Several years ago I was lucky enough to go on a private ghost hunt with Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson of Ghost Hunters, crawling through the basement tunnels not open to the public in total darkness which really added to the authenticity of the story,” Kathy said.

RIP (Rest in Peace) is Kathy’s 31st novel and will be released formally on all the major on-line bookstores on February 25th and is available in both e-book and paperback. Kathy has sold over 3 million books globally and has appeared on the NY Times and USA Today bestsellers’ list for her romance novels where she cut her author teeth on her first 23 books.

“In 2012 we joined the crowd of authors who moved from the traditionally published to the self-published e-book marketplace. This is our eighth novel as Indie-Authors,” said Bob, “including four young adult novels in the CUL8R series, two romantic suspense novels in the DENVER AFTER DARK series and the first book BABY DADDY in the SCANDALS new adult series. All but the CUL8R series are written under Kathy Clark’s pen name.”

“Self-publishing allows writers the freedom to include content that traditional publishers would shy away from. And the publishing process is more than a year quicker, so we can continue to focus on the next book in the series instead of waiting for executive approval,” Kathy explained.

The CUL8R series is about four teens from Fort Myers Beach, Florida. “We had to make the time travel trips to the past in the novels really matter…life and death situations that force the teenagers to depend on their intelligence, ingenuity and friendship so they can change the past to save the future.” Bob explained. “I discovered an October 1920 issue of American Magazine with an article that Thomas Edison was developing an electrical device to speak with the dead. This later became known as his Telephone to the Dead. Since Edison spent much of his life in the Fort Myers area, what if our teenagers found that invention, tucked away in the garage of a distant relative who had worked for Edison? What if our personality survives our passing as Edison believed?”

“In RIP [Rest In Peace] you don’t have to believe in ghosts…until you meet one,” Kathy added.

The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado has a well-deserved reputation for being one of the most haunted places in the U.S. So, when Kelly, Scott, Austin and Zoey travel back to 1911 to try to save a young child who went missing from the busy lobby, they aren’t surprised when ghost children run up and down the halls.

There’s romance in the Rockies as they take jobs with the hotel so they can keep an eye on 4 year old Emma and her family. Kelly struggles with her attraction to Austin while Zoey tries to get over her broken heart. Along the way, they meet some colorful historical characters and experience life among the rich and famous just after the turn of the twentieth century. After three other successful time travel adventures, they assume it’s just a matter of being in the right place at the right time. That almost proves to be a fatal mistake.

Kathy concluded, “But can they save Emma? Or will they join her as permanent guests in the ghostly halls of The Stanley Hotel?”

Readers! Amazing people and a great source of inspiration

Readers are those people that pay for my books or maybe because they are signed up a an ARC reader and on my email list they get one earlier than the release date.  But more importantly they are the ones that share their personal feelings about what they read with the public in the form of reviews about what they thought of the book that I wrote.

When I read the initial reviews of a new release I am very nervous because it is the first real feelings people have about what I, and in two of the three series, my husband and I, spent many hundreds of hours putting pixels on the screen about.

THUMBNAIL RIP 021614

The early reviews of RIP (Rest In Peace), A CUL8R Time Travel Mystery/Romance are beginning to show up on Amazon, Goodreads, Barnes & Noble and other places.  It occurred to me after reading them today that many of my readers who posted their reviews are in fact amazing writers in their own right.  Both Bob and I were so impressed we wanted to share some of the thoughts and words others expressed about this book.

These excerpts are in no particular order but they all say something about what we tried to accomplish with the series, this book and how well these talented people thought we captured and expressed it.

The novel perfectly captures teenage angst–about looks, about one’s place in the teenage social order, about romance, whether attraction is mutual. The book sparkles with the humor and high spirits of these teenagers, who sometimes clash but are deeply caring.

This is a wonderful series that celebrates the energy, resourcefulness, high spirits, and compassion of teenagers who yet have strong personalities and real conflicts. They face terrifying dangers in their time travels, and real life struggles in their relationships with their contemporaries as well as the adults in their lives.

Bob Kat does an exceptional job at crafting a suspenseful, gripping read that keeps the readers undivided attention right up until the very end. I loved the dynamics portrayed within this circle of friends! Kelly, Austin, Scott and Zoey are entwined flawlessly, each with their own depth of character and personality. Although I thrive on the paranormal mystery aspect of the story— the characters have to be realistic …and each must have dynamic characteristics in their own way to capture my interest and keep it peaked. This group of friends quickly sucked me into their adventures and I have enjoyed every moment of the experience right alongside them!

I want to point out foremost that the book has got a solid purpose and meaning. The team that has made this book happen was driven by the idea of providing young readers with a story that both stirs the imagination but also calls into question the motives of the main characters. Why do seek to rescue Emma? Because that’s the kind of people that we should be – always seeking to help the lost and weary, no matter the stakes. Putting aside the purpose and the meaning, I think that this is a fun and well-written book. It is clean and I would encourage young readers to pick up a copy.

“CUL8R” is a stellar YA series, and “RIP” is no exception. What makes it stand out is that the mystery/danger elements of the book are so well blended with the teen personalities—there’s suspense and realism, making the reader care not only about whether or not the mystery is solved and the day is saved, but also about the individual characters.

There are so many great examples of what was stated so eloquently but a blog about the reviews must be far shorter than the book itself.  Thank you everyone and I know this series is starting to catch on and it is because in large part because you folks took the time to write a thoughtful review of the book and series.

Here’s the places on line where you can find RIP at this time:

WRITING SUSPENSE. FROM BOOKS TO FILM AND BACK AGAIN.

When I stopped writing romance novels and began writing screenplays more than the format on the page changed for me many years ago.  I moved from a best selling romance and women’s fiction author to suspense and mystery and I changed from writing novels to writing screenplays all at once.  Screenplays taught me something about writing suspense.  When you write a screenplay the internal, not external, is where suspense builds and books are where you learn to write the internal.  Confused?  I was but writing suspense within the format and constraints of a screenplay taught me how to do it better. Years later, when I switched back to novels, I was ready to go.

Confused? Here’s what I think.

Suspense is internal.  A lot of writers mistake suspense for action.  But suspense is what you build in the quiet moments between the action.  When a reader picks up a suspense novel, they have certain expectations…to be entertained and to be surprised.  But it has to properly executed (pun intended).

Alfred Hitchcock, the undisputed master of suspense, always said it’s not about the boom.  It’s about the anticipation of the boom.  My analogy is that when you go to It’s a Small World in Disney World, you expect light and fluffy.  You’re riding along hearing that annoying song over and over and over and the little dolls are dancing and singing and suddenly you see a little Dutch boy with a knife in his chest, bleeding all over the tulips.

That’s a boom.  Shocking.  Disturbing.  But without a set-up, suspects, anticipation of the murder, red herrings…not suspense.

However, if you chose to go on The Haunted Mansion ride, you went in with anticipation that increased with every step.  It started outside with a spooky looking house, a graveyard, spider webs, eerie music.  That made promises of what was inside.  Just like a book cover.

Then you are herded very tightly into a small room.  Nothing weird yet, but just the fact that you’re crowded is unsettling.  Then the floor appears to drop, elongating the paintings so that what seemed normal became bizarre.  The doors slam open with a bang and you’re loaded into a car with spooky sounds and a creepy voice piped in through the speakers.

Then the car moves down a track and we see doors swell toward us and doorknobs turn.  We continue along and see a talking head, then the car turns and we see ghosts dancing in a ballroom, then a crystal ball.  Gradually, they increase the level of creepiness and frights with ghosts jumping up from headstones in a graveyard and screams startling you…all of which increases your heart rate because you don’t know what’s going to jump out at you next.

It’s not a constant barrage.  There are slow, almost quiet moments between the booms, so you have time to catch your breath and build your anticipation for the next scary creature to pop out.  Finally, the ride roars to a stop and you exit feeling like you survived a dangerous adventure.  All of your senses have been stimulated.  Everyone walks away smiling and laughing nervously.

That’s just like a suspense novel.  When a reader picks it up, they have an expectation of being entertained, surprised, stimulated, teased, fooled, challenged and, ultimately, satisfied.  Our job, as writers, is to pace our stories so that the ride is worth it.

Here’s my suspense and mystery books published recently:

TUMBNAIL AFTER MIDNIGHT REVISED_edited-1 THUMBNAIL CRIES IN THE NIGHT 09012013 Amazon_edited-2 THUMBNAIL SCANDALS BABY DADDY 10282013_edited-2 THUMBNAIL OMG Smashwords_edited-2 THUMBNAIL BRB eBook SMASHWORD_edited-2 THUMBNAIL BION 071613 Amazon final_edited-2

RIP, Book #4 in the Time Travel Mystery/Romance for Young Adults is…

released today 2/21/2014 through 2/23/2014.

The adventures of Kelly, Scott, Austin and Zoey continue.  Most all the usual internet sites will have it for sale by the end of this weekend.

WEB TILE CUL8R RIP  RIP 020214 Amazon

You don’t have to believe in ghosts…until you meet one.

Once again Kelly, Scott, Austin and Zoey are listening to the Spirit Radio when they hear a cry for help from a mother whose four-year-old daughter, Emma went missing in the middle of a busy lobby at the infamous Stanley Hotel.  But time traveling back to 1911 is a lot more complicated than the three trips they had taken earlier in the summer.  They have to find appropriate clothes and figure out a way to pay for their stay.  When they hear about a tragic fire that hurt several hotel employees, the teens take advantage of the hotel’s desperation and get jobs working as lady’s maids and houseboys so they can keep an eye on Emma and her family.

Even though they know that The Stanley Hotel is possibly the most haunted place in the U.S., the four teenagers are a little creeped out when they hear ghostly children running in the halls, singing songs and even a mysterious ball that keeps showing up in their room.  How could a hotel that is only two years old already be haunted?  Most importantly, how can they stop Emma from becoming one of the ghosts that are trapped inside the luxurious hotel?

Midway through their first summer together, they celebrate the Fourth of July twice in one year.  As they try to figure out the mystery of Emma’s disappearance, they bump in some famous people and experience several historical events.  But ultimately, it’s their trust in each other and the friendship that has been forged by two unique experiences no one else on the planet has ever done…talk with dead people and time travel to the past.  Their first trip back to 1966 had stopped the murder of a teenager from their school.  Their next trip to 1980 had tested their courage as they were brought face-to-face with a man who was determined to murder an entire family.  Their last trip to 1927 had saved the life of a handsome young man who had run away to a traveling circus. Zoey, the former mean girl of South Beach High School, suffered her first heartbreak by falling in love with a man from the wrong century.

Back in 1911 there are no TV news crawlers or Amber Alerts like we see along the interstate highways today.  Instead, Kelly, Scott, Austin and Zoey must try to be in the right place at the right time to stop the tragedy of Emma’s disappearance from happening.  They follow her and her family around while enjoying life among the rich and famous.  They arrive as skeptics, but leave as believers when all four teens have ghostly encounters.  Kelly and Austin grow closer as they share fireworks shows, first on the sand in Fort Myers Beach and second on a blanket in the Rocky Mountains.  But is their romance doomed almost as soon as it began?

When their plans go wrong, they face their first defeat.  The same danger that takes Emma now threatens the teens when one of their own is captured in a killer’s web.  Will they be able to save Emma?   Or will they join her as permanent guests in the ghostly halls of The Stanley Hotel?

AUTHOR UNPLUGGED on the CUL8R Series and RIP

Bob Kat, an American fiction author, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kathy_Clark_(American_author).

RIP (Rest in Peace) is Kathy’s 31st novel and will be released formally on all the major on-line bookstores on February 25th and will be available in both e-book and paperback by March 5th..

Kathy Clark’s Writing Resolutions and Plans for 2014

The year is 14 days gone and I’m just getting around to telling everyone about my plans for 2014.  Here we go…

First, thanks for stopping in.

Second, thank you all for your support of me and my books.  I’ve had four of my 2013 releases reach the top 10 on Amazon in the past 12 months.  Each one is better written and accepted, more advance reader copies are sent out [see how to get yours below] and sales have improved.  Again, thank you.

This year I have four books planned.

The Young Adult Mystery Series CUL8R [See you later] will release of book #4, RIP in February.  Fresh from their return from the 1927 circus that saw Zoey fall in love with a guy  for the right reasons but from the wrong era, the four time travelers find themselves even further back in time to 1911 and on the outside of the life of the rich and famous lifestyle at the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park Colorado. And yes this is the same Stanley Hotel that Jack Nicholson helped to make famous in the Shinning and that’s all I’m going to say.  I can assure all my readers that this is a twisted tale that will keep you in the dark.  How do I know?  I’ve crawled through the basemen of the Stanley in the dark with the Ghost Hunters, Jason and Grant.  Trust me, that is not a place you want to be in the dark at but the research first hand was vital to this story.

In March, 2014 the second book in the Scandals New Adult Romantic Suspense series, Tramp Stamp, has Reno front and center and with lives on the line his passion for the client could be the end of him.  The B-plot in this book is amazing and taken out of the fall 2013 headlines and I apologize now to all college football fans.

Later in the year you will find book #3 in the Denver After Dark series titled Graveyard Shift release. The third brother in the family, Chris, is a Denver, Colorado paramedic.  His job has its own issues to deal with and he finds the morality of the job is not as black and white as it is for his brothers, the cop and the fireman, the heroes in books one and two.

Finally, if all goes well, 2014 will see the release of book #3 in the Scandals New Adult Romantic Suspense Series with Worst Blind Date Ever.  In this third book Tulsa will get her own story and while the title sounds humorous the story is at the core of societal issues and early discussions with Tulsa tells me that you will see Tulsa’s passionate side!  It’s in there somewhere I think.

We’ll see some of you in Round Rock at the end of January for the Inside Track To Indie Publishing Workshop.  That will be January 25th and there are a smalls number of available seats.  Then in San Antonio in July at the National RWA Conference we can connect up and we’ll be around in other places.  As always we will be seeking willing readers to read and provide an honest review in support of the book release of these four 2014 books.  Just send me you email address and we’ll make sure you are on the list to participate.

Wishing you a safe, prosperous and healthy 2014…I now have a Wikipedia page and the usual social media sites.

Romance Collections Romance Box Sets They’re Here For You

Some people call them box sets and others call them collections but either way when authors group two or more of their books together and offer them at a discounted price readers win.

Kathy Clark’s romance collections, or romance box sets, are offered as none different groups.  She put two to three books in each box set or collection based on the stories being a similar topic.  This allows readers to explore an author and read stories about dads, being pregnant and alone, a military background or even set in the western United States.

All of these collections can be reviewed at your leisure on Kathy’s website at http://www.nightwriter93.com.

Here’s some of the romance collections for you information and their links on Amazon:

SWEET ANTICIPATION – Lauren Nelson was expecting a baby. What she wasn’t expecting was a man in her life. When the lovely widow decided to go through with the artificial insemination she and her husband had planned, she thought she had everything under control. She had carefully selected the donor for his intelligence, his character, his similarity in appearance to her husband and his anonymity. But a mix up in the lab casts doubt on whose sperm was actually used, and suddenly there was a possibiity there was a very real man involved who wanted the child as much as Lauren did. He just doesn’t want Lauren.

And she doesn’t want him. With her deceased husband still very much alive in her heart and her thoughts, she wasn’t ready to fall in love again. All she wanted was to create a wonderful life for her child and to have a successful florist shop. But Dr. Jordan Daniels doesn’t cooperate. In fact, nothing he does fit into her carefully planned pregnancy. And worst of all, he won’t go away.

This book was written because my readers demanded it. After the controversy of an earlier book, PASSION AND POSSESSION, the feedback from my fans inspired me to write this book about two compelling, but stubborn people who have their whole lives planned…except for the tiny twist of fate that binds them forever. I’m confident this book will satisfy even the most critical of my readers. Enjoy!

NASHVILLE NIGHTS ROMANCE COLLECTION

COLLECTIONS Nashville Nights Texas Days 062913 amazon

ANOTHER SUNNY DAY – Sarah and Sunny – the Day sisters – identical twins, a dazzling mirror image. It was Sunny who had all the talent and success as a singer. Sarah preferred to work behind the scenes as her sister’s tour assistant. But Sarah is ready to stop touring and make a life of her own. When Sunny commits to a publicity stunt of riding on a trail ride, she begs her sister to take her place, and Sarah reluctantly agrees. Sarah loves horses, and it sounds like a fun adventure.

How could Sarah know that the moment she landed in Houston bewigged, made-up, dressed in Sunny’s typical over-the-top country siren’s costume, a craggy knight in Levi’s and a cowboy hat would hand her a challenge. Tyler Ross dared the “spoiled superstar” to survive the ordeal. How could he know that horses and ranching were more Sarah’s style than star trips? How could she tell him without giving away the masquerade and ruining her sister’s career?

ANOTHER SUNNY DAY appeared on the New York Times Bestseller List and reached #3 on Waldenbooks Best Seller List of all paperbacks. When originally published, it sold over 100,000 copies worldwide.

REVIEWS:
Romantic Times Recommended List 4 Stars “…a winner with both style and grace.”

GOLDEN DAYS – It was a long time since Sunny Day’s last hit record and high time for the ravishing county -and-western singer to make her comeback.
Long ago she’d traded thoughts of lasting romance for bright lights, fame, and applause. But when she was offered the chance to tour with Texas heartthrob Dillon Landry, the country’s hottest new star, she found she had much more than music on her mind. Still, a seasoned veteran, she wasn’t about to wear her heart on her sleeve even as the rest of her ached to cling to Dillon. He was a devastatingly handsome, talented young man. She was the glamorous “older woman”. These were their golden days. And it was dangerous even to dream they could last forever.

ROMANTIC TIMES Recommended (4) “This is definitely recommended reading on any list.”
RENDEZVOUS “You can’t help but love Sunny and Dillion, and Ms. Clark writes with an understanding of what being in the limelight really means. This story stands on its on merits. Not to be missed.”

BORN TO BE WILD – As guardian of a menagerie of wild animals, veterinarian Jenny Grant loved her life. Marine biologist Garrett Reid was intrigued by the stubborn beauty who could soothe the wildest beast. In less than a month, his sailboat would be motoring out of the harbor and heading southeast. Until then, there was only the sultry heat of a South Texas summer . . . and the sensual rhythm of two hearts beating as one. Jenny knew better than to lose her heart to a man who was born to be wild.

RENDEZVOUS – “Terrific characters, interesting plot, and great romance all add up to make this a novel well worth reading.”

GO FOR YOUR DREAMS ROMANCE COLLECTION

COLLECTIONS Go For Your Dreams 062913 AMAZON

http://www.amazon.com/ROMANCE-COLLECTION-DREAMS-Romance-Collection-ebook/dp/B00D70IW32/

Many fans have requested that I offer boxed sets of my romance novels, so I have grouped them into categories that share themes. Go For Your Dreams is a collection of three of my books that are sexy romances about women who achieved very unusual dreams. Risky Business is the story of a woman trying to hang on to her inheritance. No Satisfaction is every woman’s dream about meeting that sexy rock star you were so in love with as a teenager. But now they’re all grown up. Starry Nights is based on the civilian-in-space program during the early days of the space shuttle flights. All three have a touch of modern-day fairy tale with sensual love stories backed by meticulous research. I lived my own fantasies while writing these books and hope you will get lost in dreams of your own while reading them.

RISKY BUSINESS – Julie’s whole life rode on an exquisite antique carousel. It was her legacy, her future, and all her hope. A Galveston banker was her only chance to raise the money she needed to buy and restore it. One look at blue-eyed silver-blond Julie and Ryan was willing to gamble his job on the risky loan . But he offered more than money. Could she risk it all?

REVIEWS:
ROMANTIC TIMES (4) “This book will delight the heart.”
Recommended read by ROMANTIC TIMES and LOVENOTES.

NO SATISFACTION – When Suzanne Quinn was sixteen she thought Andy Dallas was the most gorgeous, fabulously sexy guy in the world. Someday, she fantasized, she and the lead singer of the rock group Satisfaction would meet . . . meet and fall deliriously in love.
But that was a long time ago, and now she was escorting her teenage daughter’s friends to the group’s reunion concert. Amidst a sea of rollicking teenyboppers, she felt completely out of place . . . until Andy walked on stage. When he began to sing, the music wrapped itself around her like it was yesterday. When she accidentally bumps into him, she has the chance of a lifetime and soon finds herself in his arms.
But even though he made her feel like a teenager again, Suzanne is a thirty-something mother who had a business and a life that firmly grounded her to reality. Is it possible for her teenage dreams to become a reality or must she accept that she is a grown woman who must let her past go?

REVIEWS:
“ROMANTIC TIMES” – (4-) – “…readers will have a ball looking back at their ‘glory days’.”

STARRY NIGHTS – When a beautiful gymnast is chosen to join the crew of a space shuttle mission, she jumps at the chance. She enjoys every minute of her training, especially her one-on-ones with astronaut Greg Rogers. But their love creates a conflict of interest that could keep them both from achieving their dreams. Is it worth the risk?

ROMANTIC SUSPENSE ROMANCE COLLECTION

COLLECTIONS Romantic Suspenses 062913 AMAZON

http://www.amazon.com/ROMANCE-COLLECTION-ROMANTIC-SUSPENSE-Collection-ebook/dp/B00D6IS4NI/

STARTING OVER – When Kate Cramer’s husband died in a helicopter crash, the timing couldn’t have been worse. Not only is she six months pregnant with her first child, but their transport company, C-Breeze is near bankruptcy and she has no one to fly the remaining helicopter.

Rusty Russell, temporarily visiting the small Texas town, offers to help her out, promising to stay long enough to get the business back off the ground. His skills as a pilot, a mechanic and a salesman save the day, and as he and Kate work together, they form a strong bond of friendship…a friendship that was tested when he was at her side as her baby arrived.

But what felt like a beautiful beginning was shattered by a fierce hurricane and a shocking discovery that threatened to take away everything Kate…and Rusty have grown to love.

REVIEWS:

Romantic Times 4- “…a warm caring romance and a few surprise twists to keep reader interest at a peak.”

Rendezvous “I love the give and take between Kate and Rusty. A good story about the complexities of these loving individuals.”

SIGHT UNSEEN – There was a dead man in a pond. Nicki “saw” it over and over, both when she was awake and asleep. But she didn’t know who it was, where the pond was or even if it was real or just a nightmare. The mud on her shoes and her clothes made her wonder if she had actually been there and had repressed the memory. Finally, not knowing if she is guilty or innocent, crazy or sane, she confided her fears to detective Jake Kelly.

Jake wanted to believe she was innocent, but his investigations proved that everything she had “seen” had been completely accurate. She had the most to gain and the most to lose. They both needed to know the truth…but truth brought danger.

The mists and fogs of the Rockies, the shifting play of light and shadow … the imagination could easily conjure apparitions from the enchanted air that swirled around The Stanley Hotel. ROCKY MOUNTAIN MAGIC . . . all it takes is an open heart.

AUTHOR’S NOTE: I enjoyed writing this book so much…partly because the Stanley Hotel rolled out the red carpet and let us spend several weekends there as their guests and partly because it was #2 of a series and the other books were written by two very close friends. I dedicated this to Emma and Jan, both of whom were very talented authors and wonderful pals…and are sorely missed.

So several of the ROMANCE COLLECTION can cover the romance genre pretty thoroughly.  Contemporary romance, category romance, a little fantasy romance, mainstream romance, military romance, paranormal romance, romantic suspense, time travel romance, traditional romance young adult romance and now new adult romance…Kathy has a very large collection and hopefully these romance collections will provide a good introduction.

****************************************************
CHAPTER TWO

Kelly whirled around, startled. Her heart leaped into her throat as a tall young man was silhouetted against the bright sunshine. The sexual predator discussion with her aunt flashed through her mind, and she mentally measured the distance between her and the kitchen door.
“Hey, need some help?” The person stepped forward, and once inside the shadows of the garage, she could see he was just a teenage boy. He was several inches taller than she was and had medium-length dark-blond hair. Although he wore a tank top and baggy cargo shorts, his legs and arms were pretty white and boney, especially for someone who lived so close to the beach. His shoes were untied, the style of today, and he had a nice smile. Most importantly, he looked totally non-threatening.
She wiped her brow with the back of her hand, then regretted it because she knew she had probably left a dirty smear across her forehead. “Hey,” she greeted him neutrally.
“I live next door, and I noticed you were working pretty hard,” the boy said as he pointed to his house. “I’m Scott.”
Kelly’s lips relaxed into a smile. She was thrilled for any excuse to take a break. “Hey Scott, I’m Kelly.”
“Are you moving in or just visiting?”
“Visiting? No, not visiting. I’m moving in. Actually I’ve moved in. It’s my aunt’s house. I got all my stuff unpacked this morning. I told her I would help straighten out her garage. She wants to have a garage sale.” Kelly felt self-conscious and knew she was talking too much, so she forced her mouth shut and started pushing the big couch again.
Scott immediately grabbed an arm and started pulling. With his help, the couch moved easily, and they pushed it against a bare wall. “What’s her name again?” he asked.
“Jane.”
“I’ve never met her. I’ve seen her around, but she always seems to be in a big hurry. She’s not home much anyway.”
“Good to know that she’s not just avoiding me. I haven’t seen her much yet either. In fact, I’ve met her maybe six times in my whole life . . . usually on holidays and at funerals.”
“What’s next?”
“I thought we’d stack all the furniture up against the wall. I think it’ll all go in the garage sale pile. Then we can stack boxes up against it.” She pointed toward an empty corner. “The maybe keep pile goes over there, and stuff that is obviously garbage goes up front by the doors.”
“Got it. Let’s move the dining table back in against the couch.”
It was much easier with him lifting one end. Scott spread a layer of flattened cardboard boxes on top of the table, and they stacked several end tables upside down on the cardboard.
“You’ve done this before?” Kelly asked.
“Nope . . . just naturally careful.” He smiled. “My mom might call it mild OCD.”
“My aunt will definitely approve. I think she’s borderline OCD herself.”
They used more boxes to cushion the edge of the table, then stacked a bedframe and a mattress-set vertically and shoved a dresser against them to keep them upright. “There, now we’ve got some room.”
“Thanks. That went a lot quicker with help.” They turned their attention to the boxes, opening them and sorting them into the appropriate area of the garage.
“Are your parents living here, too?”
Kelly hesitated. She had just met this guy. This was all still new to her. How much or how little should she tell him? She could feel the tears building, but she knew she would always have to deal with this question, so why not now? “My parents died in a car accident and my Aunt Jane is my guardian.” She felt strangely relieved just blurting it out.
“Oh wow, I’m sorry,” Scott rushed to say. “I didn’t mean to get into your business and all.”
“No . . . it’s okay. You’re just curious. I’d probably ask you the same thing if our situations were reversed.”
“I can’t even imagine what that would be like. I’ve lived in the same house with the same parents and the same stupid little sister my whole life.”
“I always wanted a sister,” she said wistfully.
“You can have mine.”
“I doubt your mother would agree.” Her smile didn’t really disguise the sadness she was feeling, but maybe under all the dirt, he wouldn’t notice.
Scott was obviously uncomfortable. He shifted from foot to foot and looked away as he thought about what to say next. Kelly hoped this conversation wasn’t going to be repeated with every person she met.
Kelly tried to shrug it off, both to make him feel better and to change the subject. “Hey, we’re going to be neighbors, so of course you should know something about me. But I should know stuff about you, too.”
“I’m really boring. Ask anyone.”
“I doubt that.” There was something in his tone that touched Kelly and instinctively made her rush to defend him. “I’m not bored.”
“Yeah, but you’ve only known me about an hour.”
“Who’s to say that wasn’t the most exciting hour I’ve ever spent?” Kelly teased.
Scott looked at her and grinned. “Wow, that’s really sad.”
“And you thought you were boring.”
Scott laughed out loud. They turned back to the task at hand and continued to open boxes. “This is all dishes, really old looking dishes . . . it says Mary on the side,” Scott said as he lifted out a fragile china plate.
“They were my grandmother’s. I put a marker over on the table by the door. Put that over there as the start of the keeper pile for now,” Kelly ordered, pointing toward the corner.
Scott complied and returned to open another box. “More dishes, but these have Betty on them.”
“My great-grandma,” Kelly told him. “Keeper pile.”
Scott marked the box and carried it over next the first one. Within a few minutes a stack of her grandmother and great-grandmother’s dishes were in the keep pile, and a couple boxes of kitchen utensils were in the sale pile.
“Okay, you’re right,” Scott said.
“About what?”
“Here’s something about me. I’m kind of a geek which translates into not cool. I don’t have many friends in the neighborhood or school, but I’m okay with that. There are hundreds of things I’d rather do than just hang out with people who have nothing intelligent to say.”
“I mean it took you half an hour to answer me. What are some of the hundreds of things?”
“I read a lot and research . . . mostly on line.”
“Anything special?”
“Yeah . . . technical stuff. I invent things . . . mostly cell phone apps and electronic stuff. How about you”
“That’s a tough question. I used to go to the beach a lot, and I had a horse. That took up a lot of my time.”
“Horse wouldn’t work here, would it?”
“Nope. I gave her to my best friend, Gina. She and I used to ride together, so I know Scarlett will be well taken care of.”
“That must be hard on you.”
“Yeah, it sucks. But I don’t have a lot of options, you know?” She busied herself looking through a box of clothes, then marked Mary’s Clothes on them and pushed them to the sale pile.
“What grade are you going to be in?”
“My mom home schooled me, but I decided I wanted to go to public school in the fall. Every year I had to take an achievement test, and I tested out to senior level.”
Scott frowned. “I’m going to be a junior.”
“That’s great. I already told Aunt Jane I wanted to go in as a junior so I could have a couple years to get ready for college. I’m sure there will be a lot of adjustments going to a public high school.”
“High school can be brutal. Not the classes, but the kids.”
Kelly had to admit she was a little intimidated by what sort of people she would be around every day. She’d seen the movies and TV shows about mean girls. That was something out of her range of experience. But she knew that it was part of the socialization process she needed to prepare her for college. Now, hopefully, she would be starting with a friend. The fact that Scott was a little geeky and not part of the popular crowd didn’t bother her at all. He was funny and sweet and cute in a taller Josh Hutcherson sort of way. And she felt comfortable around him.
“Let’s look inside these big boxes next,” Kelly suggested.
Scott opened the top of the biggest one. “Looks like blankets, pillows and towels . . . all flowered.”
“Label it old linens, and I’ll help you slide it over to the sale pile. I doubt if anyone will buy them. If not, they can go to the Salvation Army.”
Together they started another row and within twenty minutes they had stacked up six boxes neatly along the wall.
Finally, Kelly and Scott stood, surveying the now orderly area with a real sense of accomplishment. “We made a lot of progress, thanks to you,” Kelly smiled and stood with her hands on her hips.
“Yeah, all we’ve got left is all the stuff on that old workbench and the boxes underneath it.”
Kelly hesitated, not sure if she wanted to attack that project. There were lots of tools, most really old and probably valuable to someone who knew something about tools. Kelly didn’t. Scott was poking around, looking at a few items with interest, but Kelly was too tired to dig in to the mess. There were dozens of little jars filled with screws and nails. Nothing on top of the workbench was boxed which meant a lot of item-by-item sorting. But underneath were two rows of boxes that they could probably easily be allocated to the appropriate pile.
“Why don’t we just do the boxes today?” Kelly suggested. “The stuff on top will take longer. That is, if you’re up for it.”
Scott shrugged. “I’ve got nothing better to do. Besides some of those boxes look really old. I’m curious what’s inside.”
The first row of boxes was just more really old household goods, some probably collectible, that were quickly moved to the sale pile. Kelly pulled out a small cardboard box labeled Mary’s Records.
“Hey, look at this.” She opened the box and took out a handful of small vinyl records with large holes in the centers. They were still lovingly stored in their colorful paper sleeves. She flipped through them one-by-one and read the labels aloud. “I Saw Her Standing There by The Beatles, And I Love Her and We Can Work it Out, also by The Beatles, California Dreaming by the Mamas and the Papas, Sounds of Silence by Simon and Garfunkel, Last Train to Clarksville by The Monkees, Good Vibrations and Barbara Ann by The Beach Boys and Daydream by the Lovin’ Spoonful. Wow, these are so cool.”
“Save ‘em. My parents have an old record player. They keep saying there’s no sound like old vinyl, so we can check it out and see if they’re right.”
“I’ll take these to my room later. Aunt Jane might want them, but if not, I’ll keep them. They look like they were played a lot; some of the grooves are pretty worn. My grandma Mary must have really loved these for her to have kept them from when she was a teenager.”
“My parents listen to music from the Sixties, Seventies and Eighties,” Scott agreed. “Some of it is pretty good.”
Kelly closed the box and placed it on the floor by the kitchen door. It would be fun to listen to the old songs and try to imagine how Grandma Mary had felt when she was Kelly’s age, hanging out in her room, playing her stereo. She returned to the workbench just as Scott was dragging out an old wooden crate that had been tucked in the far corner in the back. It wasn’t big, but it was pretty heavy, and it took both of them to pull it to the middle of the floor where they could open it. On the side in neatly printed, but badly faded letters was the word “Darby”.
“Darby! My great-great-grandfather’s last name was Darby. Do you see a claw hammer?”
They rummaged through the pile of tools and Scott held one up. “Got it.” He held it out to her.
“Go ahead . . . you can have the honor.”
Scott smiled, “Thanks.” He kneeled down and worked the lid off the box, being careful not to damage the wood and then set it to the side, nails pointing down. “Safety first.”
He removed a layer of dried straw from the top, revealing a large yellowed envelope. He opened it and slid the paper out. “Holy crap!” he exclaimed as he quickly scanned it.
“What is it?”
“A letter from Thomas Edison.” Scott stood, barely able to contain his excitement as he walked toward the front of the garage where the light was better. The ink had faded and was almost impossible to read in spots.
“Really?” Kelly followed and peered down at the letter in amazement.
“I wrote three different term papers on Edison. I love this guy. He was America’s greatest inventor. His house and museum aren’t very far from here. I’ll take you there when you’re settled. We can spend an entire day there easy.”
“Jeez, Scott . . . what’s the letter say, anyway?”
Scott began to read the letter out loud. “From the Laboratory of Thomas A. Edison, Fort Myers, Florida. April 14th, 1929.” He held the letter out for Kelly to see. “ I love how they used to write letters back in the day.”
“Really, that’s what it says?”
“No . . . no . . . that was me. Okay, it says, Mr. R. J. Darby, As you and many of my people already know, I am reducing my workload on several of my inventions. This decision has been a long time coming. Deciding what to work on and what to not work on has been very difficult. One of the items I have decided to stop development on is the Telephone to the Dead as you and I have called it. It has been two years of collaboration which I have greatly valued, but I fear it will not be widely accepted. In appreciation for your many years of dedicated work for me, I am officially giving to you this device and all rights forever. You are free to continue its development on your own time and with your own resources as you see fit. I wish you the best of success as you fine-tune it for commercial use. Signed, Thomas A. Edison.”
Scott sat in silence staring at the letter almost in disbelief.
“My great-great-grandfather worked for Edison?” Kelly was equally shocked and impressed. She had no idea that someone in her family had had such a close brush with greatness.
“He was a mucker,” Scott said with authority.
“A what?”
“A mucker.”
“Did you make that up?” she asked skeptically, not really knowing if he was insulting or complimenting her distance relative.
“Nope. That’s the name that Edison gave to his helpers who actually did the metal work, carpentry, you know, all the manual labor on all his inventions. He had so many inventions going at the same time, he couldn’t do all the work on them, so he hired young men right out of college or technical school to help out. I’ve talked with a lot of people around here and no one knows where that name came from, but it’s real.”
“Go on.”
